Unlocking the Gateway: A Practical Guide from Ingress to Gateway API
03-18, 14:35–15:05 (Europe/Paris), Arena

Have you heard about Gateway API, but find yourself wondering how to start leveraging its benefits? Supported by over 25 implementations, Gateway API is the next generation of Kubernetes Networking APIs.
If you want to understand HOW and why to upgrade, this talk is for you.

In this session, Lior and Mattia, holding distinct leading roles in Gateway API development, will share their experience and embark on a complete, step-by-step, real-world migration from Ingress, and implementation-specific configurations to Gateway API. They’ll talk about decision factors, and when Gateway API can provide significant benefits over current deployments. They’ll focus on ingress2gateway and its pivotal role in the migration journey, and continue with common pitfalls and challenges where you’ll also find answers to questions like “How do I shift my DNS?” or “How to handle TLS configurations?”. Finally, you’ll learn how you can get involved, and how your voice can influence future development plans.

With Gateway API recently graduating to General Availability (GA) and gaining increased support from major cloud providers and leading mesh projects, more and more people are interested in upgrading to the API.

This talk stands apart as more than just an introduction. It will bridge that gap and offer tangible, real-world examples that resonate with the audience. It will introduce ingress2gateway, a tool designed within SIG-Network to make the migration less intimidating, providing a robust entry point and easy support for different mesh projects and cloud providers. The talk will tackle common challenges head-on, addressing burning questions like "How do I test my Gateway?" and "How do I safely shift DNS?" or "What if I need to relocate a certificate to the Gateway?" and “How do I even choose an implementation?”

By the end of this session, our anticipation is that the audience will emerge not only more confident but equipped with practical insights to dive into Gateway API, explore its features, and unlock its benefits with newfound confidence.

Lior is site reliability engineer at Google working on Google Compute Engine. He is a leading maintainer of ingress2gateway, and an active contributor to Kubernetes SIG network focused on Gateway API.

Mattia is a Software Engineer at Kong, working on Kubernetes networking. He is a key contributor to some SIG-Network projects, such as Gateway API, Ingress2Gateway, and Blixt, and a co-lead of Kong's Gateway API implementation. He is working on many Kong projects related to networking in Kubernetes, among which are the Ingress controller and the Gateway Operator.
