Distributed compute at scale is a bit complex back home in Mauritius - cloud service providers are an ocean away, and local policies don't help either.
To "bring the cloud home", so to speak, a small team of tech enthusiasts decided to build a Kubernetes cluster distributed across the country, in a bid to drive down costs while boosting resilience and availability.
This session goes over the challenges of setting up such a geographically distributed cluster, including fighting latency, connection issues, dynamic IPs, and the behemoth that is distributed storage.
Finally, it will cover how this cluster was adapted to provide edge computing for a local startup, where it was deployed in rough conditions for a bucket-load of tasks, including AI/ML.
Alexandre Bissessur, who most commonly goes by Alex, is a young IT professional specialising in Cloud Native technologies, particularly Kubernetes. He is an organiser of the Cloud Native Chapter in Mauritius. Alongside Cloud Native, Alex is experienced in many other domains including development and system administration.
An avid homelabber, he takes a lot of pride in the servers he runs in the living room at home, much to the displeasure of his parents.
Finally, he is a strong advocate for FOSS, pushing for more widespread adoption back home in Mauritius.
