Simplifying cross-cloud, cross-cluster connectivity with Dapr & Cilium
2025-03-31 , The Nash

Modern systems often require cross-cluster connectivity for failover, replication or shared services architectures, but these patterns introduce challenges. How do you establish zero-trust across clusters? Ensure quality observability across clouds? Debug inter-cluster traffic while enabling reliable service and infrastructure communication?

This talk demonstrates how Dapr and Cilium, both CNCF graduated projects, simplify cross-cluster, cross-cloud connectivity. See a live demo showcasing how Dapr provides straightforward APIs for building workflow, state and data apps while enabling seamless deployment across clouds without code changes. Paired with Cilium’s Multi-Cluster Mesh, see how services in one cluster interact with resources in another without sacrificing security, reliability or observability.

Attendees will gain practical knowledge for overcoming cross-cluster, cross-cloud architecture challenges while following microservices best practices and saving development time.

Cross-cluster and cross-cloud connectivity is increasingly important for organizations using Kubernetes, whether due to compliance requirements, geographic distribution, or a desire to avoid vendor lock-in. However, this often leads to challenges in networking across these boundaries, with existing solutions sometimes forcing difficult trade-offs between simplifying development and maintaining operational efficiency. This can result in complex architectures that are hard to build and maintain.

By integrating Dapr, with Cilium’s Multi-Cluster Mesh, a service mesh that supports secure connectivity, this architecture offers a practical approach to overcoming these challenges. It can simplify the connection of services across clusters and clouds with low-latency and high-throughput communication. The architecture also provides strong observability, security, and resiliency. The abstraction of the Dapr APIs minimizes operational overhead, enabling cross-cloud deployments without code changes, while reducing development time by up to 30%.

Since March 2024, Manuel has rejoined the codecentric team as a Solution Architect. His main focus continues to be passionately on cloud-native software development, API gateways, service meshes, and Kubernetes in general. Additionally, Manuel remains a maintainer of the well-known cloud-native application proxy Traefik.
