This paper presents a strategic approach to application estate modernization focused on achieving consistency and reducing technology sprawl through platform standardization. Modernization efforts encompass the optimization of deployment architectures, transitioning from traditional Virtual Machines (VMs) to containerized environments, and re-architecting monolithic applications into scalable microservices, alongside judicious cloud migration. We specifically detail a real-world implementation showcasing a successful modernization journey where the adopted strategies simultaneously optimized both application deployment efficiency and underlying infrastructure utilization. This case study provides practical insights into leveraging holistic modernization to drive significant operational and architectural improvements.
Moving to managed Kubernetes in the cloud felt easy initially. However, as our setup grew, we found ourselves wanting more control, especially over costs and data localization. Therefore, we decided to bring our Kubernetes clusters back home, rebuilding them on our own servers. This talk is about what we learned during that process. We'll talk about moving several busy Kubernetes clusters from managed cloud services (like EKS, AKS and GKE) to our own infrastructure.
We faced real challenges in getting cloud-native features working on-prem, especially with networking, load balancing, storage, security, GitOps and at-birth capabilities. We'll share how we tackled these, including the special framework we built. This framework makes deploying and managing Kubernetes clusters on our on-prem servers much smoother. It handles logging, monitoring, out-of-the-box security, and multi-tenancy with a reduction of 60% of OpEx
